Jorhat, Oct 10: To facilitate a thorough investigation into the enigmatic passing of renowned Assamese figure Zubeen Garg, the Asom Sahitya Sabha has contacted its branch in Singapore, requesting their support in involving Assamese expatriates who may have connections to the case.
Dr. Basanta Kumar Goswami, the president of the Asom Sahitya Sabha, addressed the media, stating that the organization has formally asked its active Singapore branch to assist the investigation team in reaching out to Assamese individuals living in Singapore who were associated with the late artist during his last days.
“The Asom Sahitya Sabha has branches in various countries, including Singapore. We believe it is crucial for the Singapore branch to take initiative and, by all means possible, send members who were involved in the incident back to Assam to aid the police investigation,” Dr. Goswami remarked.
He further mentioned that the Sabha has extended this formal invitation, stressing the importance of the expatriate community stepping forward for the sake of justice and transparency.
“The Singapore branch is active, and I genuinely hope they will respond positively to this request. They must assist in clarifying this tragic event that has deeply affected the people of Assam,” Dr. Goswami added.
Expressing profound sadness over Zubeen Garg's untimely death, he referred to him as the “heartbeat of Assam.”
“Among Assam's 3.5 crore residents, nearly three crore hearts resonate with Zubeen Garg. He represented the essence of Assam. It is unfathomable that someone like Zubeen could meet such a fate in a civilized society,” Dr. Goswami stated.
Addressing the discussions circulating on social media, he noted a prevailing sentiment of injustice regarding the case. He urged the government to ensure that the legal proceedings are robust and transparent.
“What we have observed and heard on social media suggests that a significant injustice has occurred against Zubeen. The people of Assam demand justice—not only for Zubeen but also for his family and the collective conscience of our state. The law must act decisively and effectively,” he urged.
Dr. Goswami acknowledged Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s recent commitment to file a chargesheet within three months but pointed out a critical gap in the process—the absence of direct communication with the Assamese community in Singapore.
“No arrangements have been made yet to reach out to any Assamese individuals or organizations in Singapore who might possess vital information. Thus, we are appealing to the Singapore branch of the Asom Sahitya Sabha to help establish this connection,” he explained.
In conclusion, Dr. Goswami reaffirmed the Sabha’s dedication to ensuring that truth and justice prevail in the investigation surrounding Zubeen Garg's tragic loss.
“The people of Assam will not rest until justice is served. We believe that with the cooperation of our Singapore branch and other Assamese abroad, we will be closer to uncovering the truth behind Zubeen’s death,” he concluded.
